The Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II, commonly known by its nickname as "Warthog" or "Hog", is a twin-engine, straight-wing jet aircraft designed solely for close air support of ground forces. It appears in a flashback during the Pazuzu Arc.
History[]
During the Gulf War, one flew over Wiley and his unit while they were patrolling in Kuwait with burning oil wells in the distance. Wiley commented on its cannon, leading his fellow engineers to banter about what would be better for destroying tanks, the A-10 or their own explosives.
Anime and manga differences[]
The A-10 is given greater exposure in the anime when a pair outbound on a mission fly over the base where Wiley is stationed when Lehm visits to recruit him for the mission to destroy an Iraqi chemical weapons plant.
